Hours after Israel declared it had killed a senior Hezbollah commander in Beirut, Ismail Haniyeh, the political head of Hamas, was assassinated in an airstrike in Tehran early on Wednesday morning.

After taking part in the new Iranian president’s inauguration ceremony, he was attacked at his Tehran home. The two killings deal serious blows to Hezbollah and Hamas, but they also put Iran, which supports both organizations, in jeopardy. They will stoke rising concerns that the Gaza War might turn into a larger regional war. Haniyeh passed away only a few hours after Israel declared that it had killed Fuad Shukur, the chief military commander of Hezbollah, in an airstrike on a suburb of south Beirut.

The attack was in revenge for a missile attack that had killed twelve children over the weekend. After receiving assurances from Israel’s partners that the nation was preparing a restrained response that would not spark a conflict, Lebanon’s foreign minister described the attack in Beirut as a shock. Russia and Turkey denounced Haniyeh’s death on Wednesday morning, with Moscow characterizing it as an entirely intolerable act of political murder.

Other Countries’ Response To Ismail Haniyeh’s Death
Iran’s top security council convened early on Wednesday to talk about the nation’s reaction to the murder. Regarding Haniyeh’s demise, the Israeli military remained silent. Israel’s intelligence agencies have a track record of carrying out covert operations inside Iran, primarily targeting scientists associated with Iran’s nuclear program. Israel has pledged to eliminate all Hamas leaders following the October 7 strikes. Hamas has withstood the killings of several of its key figures in the past, most notably Haniyeh’s mentor Ahmed Yassin in 2004. Following his exile in 2019, Haniyeh did not oversee operations in Gaza.
